2007 Summer Academy

8-week program launches June 25, 2007

Rock climbing, caving and kayaking are just some of the many outdoors activities for low -income kids ages 11-13 this summer through the Urban League of Portland’s Summer Academy.

The Urban League will launch its eight-week Summer Academy on June 25. The Academy ends on August 25 and will be held at the Maranatha Church at 4222 NE 12th Ave, Portland.  The Summer Academy is a new program designed to build on the academic, cultural and social skills of Middle School students, while introducing them to enjoyable, challenging outdoor pursuits.

Students will have an opportunity to improve their math, reading, and financial literacy through activities focusing on art, literature and multiculturalism.

Some of the exciting outdoor activities that Summer Academy students will explore are:

  • Caving
  • Rock climbing
  • Sea Kayaking
  • Trips to the World Forestry Center
  • Outdoor Living
  • Ropes course

The Summer Academy costs only $25.00 per child for the first two, and $5.00 for each child thereafter for the full eight-week course.

“This is an affordable opportunity for young people to challenge themselves, build up their confidence, skills and self-esteem while having a great time. Our program connects inner-city students to all the experiences Portland has to offer on the environment, culture and recreational activities,” said Howard Moriah, Urban League Education Director. “The academy will also give students an opportunity to explore non-traditional careers pathways in forestry, the environment and outdoor recreation.”
