Education & Youth Development Program Overview
Investing in Our Youth; Our Future
The Urban League’s Education and Youth Development program (EYDP) has been providing academic support for the young people of Portland for over 20 years. The program currently provides an after-school tutorial program for middle-school and high school students in several local schools, mentoring and leadership development. The program is developing initiatives to engage under-achieving low-income students of color in enrichment activities that promote academic success.
We provide intensive tutorial support focusing on math and literacy. The result has been 60% of participating students rising to, or exceeding benchmark level, an improvement in classroom participation and an increase in completed homework assignments.
The Urban League is a trusted advocate for students of color and their parents/carers within the school district, encouraging policies and practice that support cultural competency and diversity in education and staffing.
